The Groovebirds - Voices Music Interview

The Groovebirds, founded by Tracy J, are an American songwriter and recording group who perform original lyric-based alternative/soft rock compositions. The Groovebirds have released three albums and one EP since they began their musical journey in 2014, and their music has been featured on radio and television programs in the UK, Australia, and the United States. What is your earliest memory of music? And, how did you get started in music? My earliest memories are of my mother who was a folk singer and guitarist. She would play for me when I was just a child. As I got older music was always something I gravitated towards; its always been in my life in some form or another. My grandfather and mother were both musicians, so it runs in my family.

What was the first song you ever wrote? What or who inspired you to start writing music? Oh wow, I can't remember the first song I wrote, but the influences of music were seeded by my grandfather who was a studio musician in LA, and my mom who was a natural folk musician. I think I am the type of lyricist who is more of a story singer. Do you play any instruments? If yes tell us about it. If not, do you work with a band or studio musicians? Do you produce your tracks or work with a producer? I play bass predominantly but I can also play guitar, harmonica, native american flute a little bit, and I am a wanna be drummer but I don't practice enough...hahahaha.... it's always a journey to become a good musician, you never stop learning. I like going into the studio to work with people. You always learn something. What is your favorite part about being an artist (performing, recording, writing, playing)? I like sharing musical idea's with people, I like sound and the variety of it. I feel that musicians that are authentic to themselves and their own music have a wonderful platform to connect with humanity if they play music for the truth of it. Do you have any advice for young women pursuing music? I have advice for my younger sister's in music...since I am an older musician I have lived and seen many things, I have had many experiences both good and bad. I feel strongly that women in music should support each other and lift each other up. Life can be very trying at times, and one must be true to themselves but also have compassion and kindness for the earth and all creatures in it. We need people right now more than ever who speak the truth. For readers who have never heard your music, can you suggest one or two songs to start with? I really dig "there are stars" off our last album and off our first album I dig "Delila and Samson". They are two very different tunes but cool enough in their own ways.
